In this article, we will review several best laptops that are optimal for journalism, blogging and writing books, novels, notes, business proposals etc. In addition, we will also provide you a list of the best desktops for writers.

This guide is meant to help full time writers to choose the best laptop for writing who use laptops as their primary writing platform. All of the laptops and desktops listed here are amongst the best computers to write on.

What makes any laptop the best laptop for writers, bloggers and journalists?

A good laptop for writing or a good laptop for blogging should have the following traits.

  • Optimal laptops for writers must have a latest powerful processor in addition to abundant RAM on board for optimum performance.

  • A lightweight laptop is more writer friendly. Many writers, especially journalists, have to carry their laptop wherever they go. For that reason, a lightweight laptop is optimal for writers.

  • A laptop with a backlit keyboard is more writer friendly. Having a backlit keyboard allows a writer to operate in a low light setting.

  • A laptop with a full size keyboard and a spacious palm rest area will be more blogger friendly.

  • A laptop with a long battery life and without overheating problem will efficiently serve a writer’s needs.

Laptop configuration recommendation for writers (Same configuration is recommended on the desktops for writers).
  • Storage: We recommend your laptop to have at least 100GB of free space available. In addition, we would recommend laptops with Solid State Drive over laptops with traditional HDD storage.
  • RAM: We recommend at least 6GB of RAM on your computer.
  • Software: Norton™ Antivirus and Microsoft® Office 365 Subscription (You will have to buy them separately).
  • Processor: We recommend AMD A6/Intel® i3 OR better.
  • Backlit Keyboard: Helpful to write in the dark/lowlight settings.
  • Keyboard: Full size keyboard will be easy to operate especially if you use numbers frequently.

Before purchasing, make sure your primary laptop choice to write on meets all of the above mentioned criteria. When you make an informed purchase, your writing career will be much more easier for years to come.

4. Surface Book for professional writers- Best Laptop for Blogging 2017

We recommended this laptop for professional writers and bloggers. Honestly, We believe Surface Book is too expensive for seasonal writers because it costs in excess of $1500. That kind of investment is worth it only for professional writers, career journalists or well established bloggers.

The Microsoft Surface book is the latest innovation by Microsoft, which is extremely powerful and is loaded with advanced features.

The Surface Book has 6 different versions with different configurations. For a writer, graphic card is not that important. For most professionals, 8GB RAM and Intel® i5 processor is more than enough. Whether you would like to have 128GB memory or 256GB memory (both SSD) on your surface book depends on the amount of work you do.

On the surface book, battery life is 12 hours,  the display is ultra high definition and its keyboard has backlit feature.

    • Thanks for the comment Rob. Writers naturally use the laptops more than regular users. Its better if they make sure their laptop is fast, responsive and does not overheat.

  1. I am wondering if you have ever had problems with your thumb brushing against the touchpad and highlighting and erasing content while you’re writing. This is my biggest problem with my current laptop and I’m not sure whether I need to just get a wireless mouse and shut down the touchpad altogether, or if you have found that any of these laptops has less of a problem with that. Thanks!

    • I personally have my thumbs in the air, just few cms above my touchpad. But, I understand it is not easy to change the style altogether. I am not sure exactly which laptop you have but there are ways to make your touchpad less sensitive. That should reduce the problem by a lot. Try that first and see if it corrects the problem before you shutdown the touchpad altogether. Let us know which laptop model do you have in possession or search “reduce touchpad sensitivity on …….”. Lots of forum entries should pop up with the exact way to do that on your particular laptop. Hope that helps!

  2. These products are good. My question is: Can i used the portable monitor with it? If Yes, then please tell me which laptop is best for connect and used with secondary monitor.

  3. THANKYOU for this article, I was a very unsure what laptop to buy and didn’t want to pay out a load of money on a laptop I’m completely unsure about. I’m still a little unsure but now I have read this article with its useful tips and pointers, I feel confident enough to explore the laptop world and make a decision.

  4. Could you use the word ‘awesome’ a few more times, please?

First, I don’t think you know what writers need in a laptop. Tiny screens, 1080p resolutions… these are for gamers, not writers. A writer needs a display that can swivel around, one it’s open, into a portrait orientation… you know, like a sheet of paper so an entire page can be viewed all at once. As for keyboards, chiclets just won’t do and there isn’t a single laptop you’ve deemed ‘awesome’ that has a decent keyboard.

    • Hi, thanks for the awesome comment.:) The MacBook pro has all the features you seek in terms of display. All of our writers use MacBook pro. By the way, gamers “need” GPU, not tiny screens and 1080p resolution. Those are personal preferences.

However, it is always good to have a better screen resolution in the laptop, especially since writers spend enormous amount of time in front of the laptops.

What laptops you think are the best for writers in your view? If you would answer that, other readers would have more options to choose from.

And looks like you are from Canada. All the laptops listed here might or might not be available up there. Good luck!

  5. I just couldn’t depart your web site before suggesting that I extremely enjoyed
the standard information a person provide in your visitors?
Is going to be back frequently in order to inspect
